Risperdal – An Introduction
Risperdal is used for the treatment of people suffering from schizophrenia, a serious mental disorder leading to hallucinations and delusions. It is also known by its generic name Risperidone. It is also used for treating short-term mania linked with bipolar disorder. Risperdal belongs to a group of medications known as atypical anti-psychotics. They are different from other anti-psychotics as they work by muting the impact of serotonin and dopamine. Serotonin and dopamine are two key chemical messengers of the brain. Recently some concerns have arisen over Risperdal as the use of this drug increases the risk of death among elderly people. According to the Food and Drug Administration, elderly patients using Risperdal are at a higher risk of death as compared to those who do not take this drug. Risperdal has also been associated with the early on set of fatal nervous system condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS). NMS causes irregular or fast heartbeat, high fever, confusion, sweating, change in blood pressure and stiff muscles. Individuals experiencing these symptoms should contact a doctor immediately.
