Rise in the Drug Deaths sets New Record

According to the study conducted by the nonprofit Institute for Safe Medication Practices, severe side effects and deaths caused by the prescribed drugs has set new records. During the first three months of 2008, no. of patients suffering from the side effects increased rapidly as compared to the data of 1990s. According to the analysis done by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, there were more than 21,000 reports of severe side effects caused by drug consumption including more than 4,800 deaths.

According to the reports two, drugs Chantix and Heparin top the list of being labeled as the most dangerous drugs. Chantix is an anti smoking drug. The seratonin receptors in the brain are blocked by Chantix. Thus it becomes easy to stop smoking by decreasing the effects from nicotine. However the drug has been the subject of various studies, investigations, lawsuits and reports. According to FDA, Chantix may be associated with numerous psychiatric problems like nightmares, depression, mood swings and suicidal thoughts. There is high probability that Chantix may worsen the preexisting psychiatric problems like suicidal tendencies, violent behavior and depression. FDA will review the label warning of Chantix and may provide stronger warning on its label. Chantix is manufactured by Pfizer. According to Pfizer, Chantix is a safe drug and all this negative reporting is associated with side effects of the drug.

Heparin, a blood thinner produced in China tops the list of most dangerous drugs. It is distributed by Baxter. FDA recalled the Heparin when the drug was found to be responsible for allergic reactions like low blood pressure and even death. As soon as the FDA declared that it would investigate the side effects of drug, import of the heparin was stopped by the Baxter.  After heparin was related to serious side effects including four deaths and many allergic infections, Baxter halted its manufacturing in 2008.
