Pain Therapy – LegalInformation
Health related issues and diseases increases with growing age. Moreover, with it increases physical ailments. Management of pain is one of the primary physical ailments affecting more than 30% of people. Pain management includes variety of pains and ache from arthritis to, back, neck, head and joint problems to cervical and other serious types of chronic pain forming a large part of daily medicines.
There are few new painkillers available in the market while few are in the development stage. During the period of 2001-2005, there was growth of $10 million dollars due to the expansion of the global pain market by eight percent. Though the pain market was witnessed the continuous growth for many years, sales of pain management drugs dropped by 7% in 2004 -2005. The sales dropped because of withdrawal of the two drugs from the market, namely, Bextra and COX-II inhibitors Vioxx. These drugs were taken away from the market for the safety of the patients. Celebrex, manufactured by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, is the only COX- II drug available in the market.
Class of drugs called anticonvulsants led the present pain market. In 2005, sales of this drug increased to $12 million. Anticonvulsants are drugs approved for curing different types of seizures occurring because of disorders like epilepsy. Few anticonvulsants are used for treating similar conditions, in the treatment of bipolar disorders and for curing neurogenic pain.
It is believed that some anticonvulsants effects the functioning of central nervous system while others affect excess neuron function, suppress neurochemical process and others regulate electrochemical functioning of the brain. Majority of $12 million sales was from off –label use of these drugs.
According to the industry specialists, there will be consistent increase in the sales of anticonvulsants through 2010. The side effects of consuming anticonvulsants are not cleared and new side effects may continue to rise.
Pharmaceutical company Pfizer dominates the current pain market. The same company Pfizer will lead the market even in 2011 due to the continuous success of Celebrex and due to the launch of new drug Lyrica.
Patients who have been injured or suffering from health ailments due to any anticonvulsants drug should seek the advice of pharmaceutical lawyer so that he can be compensated for the damages.
