No Decision Taken on Adderall by FDA

Adderall is used for treating the patients suffering from attention-deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD).  It is a controversial drug on which Food and Drug Administration is unable to take any decision. Adderall is manufactured by Shire Pharmaceuticals. It was banned in Canada for a short period. This ban was imposed after the allegations of severe cardiac side effects. Although, certain FDA officials felt that “black box” warning is necessary, decision has not been taken yet.

Adderall

A brand name for amphetamine mixed salts, Adderall is used to treat the adults and children suffering from ADHD. This drug improves and stabilizes the focus and concentration in the patients suffering from hyperactivity.  It was initially prescribed as Obetrol in 1970s. Adderall is followed largely by students who use it as a study aid.

Adderall has a no. of side effects including sweating, loss of appetite, vertigo, sexual dysfunction, gastrointestinal disorders, irritability, and insomnia. However, it was due to the death of 12 American children that the drug was temporarily banned in Canada. During 1992 and 2003, 12 American children consumed Adderall and died of cardiac symptoms. Health Canada suspended the sales of all the Adderall in 2005.

Health Canada lifted the ban from Adderall after the report submitted by three independent physicians. FDA warns that the patients suffering from cardiac or mental illness should not use Adderall. FDA neither has banned the drug nor gave any warnings except standard warnings. In March 2006, pediatric advisory committee of FDA voted not to give black box warning to Adderall.

Off the Label Use of Adderall – A Growing Threat

Adderall is prescribed to children and adults for the attention-deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD). “Off the label” use of drug especially by college students is increasing rapidly.

A brand name for the amphetamine mixed salts, Adderall, is manufactured by Shire Pharmaceuticals, Inc. It is sold in Canada and United States for the treatment of the patients suffering from ADHD. In 1996, Adderall was approved to cure the children and in 2004, it was approved for the treatment of adults suffering from ADHD.

Use of Adderall enhances the production of the hormones norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain.  It improves the attention level and concentration in patients. Three to seven percent of the schoolchildren suffer from ADHD .Therefore, the drug improves the focus of such children enabling them to carry on their regular activities.

Illegal users of Adderall use it under the table. However, sometimes use of Adderall is due to healthcare professionals who prescribe it to the patients suffering from depression. It is also used for the treatment of narcoleptic patients. Adderall is one of the most popular study drugs and is used widely by the people wishing to lose weight.

Abuse of prescription drug is a matter of growing concern in the United States. Because of the competitive environment in the colleges, students depend on such drugs to gain energy and increase concentration. It is illegally sold as a street drug in the United States. Aficionados refer to it as zing, diet coke, study buddies and smart pills. They buy Adderall pills for $2 and $10 depending on dosage.

Primary concern in “off the label” use of Adderall is “dependency”. People who started using Adderall as a study drug found that they were unable to feel confident in their learning skills and study habits. This results into long-term side effects like sexual dysfunction, gastrointestinal complaints and insomnia. Users who have suffered from mental illness, cardiac illness and drug abuse may experience life-threatening side effects of Adderall like Tourette’s syndrome, hallucinations and high blood pressures.

People using off the label Adderall may not be given any compensation for the serious side effects of Adderall. If somebody is suffering from on the label use of Adderall, should contact a lawyer for Adderall claim. You will be compensated for costs like lost wages, medical expenses, pain and suffering and future medical care.
