Music Heals the Brain Injury of TBI patients

According to a study published in the Medical Hypotheses, music therapy benefits the patients suffering from neuropsyhciatric disorders, caused by a traumatic brain injury accident.

According to the researchers at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, located in Boston, “the brain grows in response to musical training in the way a muscle responds to exercise.” However, more research is required to understand the scientific findings and outcomes of the music swaying the rehabilitation of neurons located in the brain. Currently music is used as a part of the treatment of TBI patients and researchers are conducting research to find the treatment of following conditions using music:

  • Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • Huntington’s disease
  • schizophrenia
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • stroke

According to a study published in the September 2007, issue of Behavioral Pharmacology, research is being conducted to determine whether the patients suffering from Parkinson’s disorder, psychiatric disorder and other conditions associated with brain responds to music or not. The study established that “music exposure significantly enhanced the learning performance” to an injured mouse. The study further suggested that the results might “help in several central nervous system pathologies.”

Living with TBI

TBI is a condition affecting approximately 5.3 million Americans every year. This no. is rapidly increasing. There are extensive side effects of TBI and the severity of these adverse side effects depends on a per basis diagnosis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are some common elements of a TBI injury including the following:

  • changes in sleep patterns
  • loss of sensory ability
  • headaches and neck pain
  • becoming confused or lost more easily
  • memory loss
  • nausea, vomiting
  • ringing in the ears
  • mood changes

Researchers and scientists are continuously studying new methods to better rehabilitate and treat TBI victims and understand the brain and its function. Recently, the University of California San Diego (UCSD) was awarded $60 million grant for studying the treatment for TBI patients and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). According to the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA), there are some additional types or categories of TBI including the following:

  • contusion
  • second impact syndrome
  • coup-contre coup injury
  • locked in syndrome
