Menu Foods Leads to Kidney Failure in Cats and Dogs
The recall of pet food manufactured by Canada based Menu Foods, Inc has put pet owners in panic. Consumption of pet food has been associated with kidney failure and deaths in cats and dogs. This pet food recall affected more than 45 brands countrywide including major retailers Wal- Mart and Kroger.
The pet food recall was taken after the trials and complaints alerted the manufacturers of pet food about the possibility of cats and dogs falling sick after eating contaminated pet food. The tainted pet food includes “cuts-and-gravy”-style wet cat and dog food sold in small cans and pouches. These pet foods are marketed under various brand names including IAMS, Purina and Eukanuba. The consumption of contaminated pet food leads to kidney failure and death in some pets.
Menu Foods’ Emporia, Kansas facility manufactured this contaminated pet food between December 2006 and March 2007. However, it is unsure that which part of food is infected. Some reports cited contaminated wheat gluten as a culprit but consumers will get some authentic answer after the United States Food and Drug Administration and Menu Foods conducts some more tests. According to the federal Food and Drug Administration’s report, approximately 15 animals died after being fed with contaminated pet food, but consumers across the nation reported more deaths of cats and dogs.
The news of contamination in pet foods panicked pet owners who overloaded veterinary telephone lines by calling them repeatedly. Now, pet owners closely observed the symptoms of their cats and dogs. Of kidney failure in pets includes reduced appetite, lethargic behavior, foul breathe, vomiting including other signs and symptoms of illness. FDA recommended that all the consumers who purchased recalled pet food should refrain from feeding it to their pets and immediately contact the retailer or manufacturer for a refund of money.
The voluntarily of pet food raised serious questions on the quality control in pet foods. Although, the food manufactured for human consumption has to cautiously regulated but the pet food industry has its own standards for testing the pet food and is more self – policing as compared to the mainstream industry. Moreover, FDA inspectors never visited plant suspected to have manufactured the contaminated pet food. However, FDA considers human health and food at much higher standards than those of pet animals. Unfortunately, this may lead to an unprecedented toll on those pet owners unsuspectingly fed their pet animals Menu Foods Inc.
This pet food recall has affected 42 cat food brands and 53 dog food brands.
