Crestor Side Effects

After issuing public Health Advisory in 2005, FDA announced to review the information on the drug. In these changes, FDA strengthened the prescription language of Crestor, a drug used for lowering cholesterol. Due to these changes, consumer groups will further pressurize FDA to withdraw the drug from the market.

AstraZeneca, manufacturers of Crestor added the following new information on the drug:

  • Effects liver function and patient consuming this drug needs blood test before and during the treatment in order to monitor functioning of liver.
  • Does not prevent strokes, heart diseases and heart attacks.
  • May cause abdominal pain, muscle pain , intense nausea and  weakness

According to the recent research, Crestor causes muscle, liver and kidney problems. Still FDA has not removed it from the market. FDA announced that it continually monitors all the statin drugs through its Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS).

The Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS) gathers all the safety information about the drugs and thus helps FDA to monitor all the drugs available in the market. Though it can disclose information to the public, the disclaimer on the first page states, “the information contained in these [adverse event] reports has not been scientifically or otherwise verified as to a cause and effect relationship and cannot be used to estimate the incidence of adverse drug reactions.”

Manufacturers of all statin drugs suggest that patients consuming these drugs should immediately contact a doctor on experiencing weakness, muscle pain and tenderness. Use of statin drugs causes several muscle problems like aches, pain and inflammation in the muscles including weakness.
