Crib Recall – An Insight

Many large scales recalls of dangerous bassinets and cribs were institutes in the past few years. Most of these voluntarily withdrawal are the outcomes of chocking, strangulation, falling hazards to children and infants resulting in life threatening injury or death.

Delta Enterprise Corp., a company making products fro small children announced a voluntarily withdrawal of 1.60 million cribs associated with two infant deaths. This voluntarily recalls is the outcome of two distinct types of hardware used in cribs from 1996 to 2005. This hardware includes spring pegs for one set of cribs and safety pegs for another set of cribs. If not installed properly, this can lead to hazard. Moreover, there is high possibility that that the drop side of can disengage and fall and it can create a gap that can suffocate and entrap infants. Earlier also, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) declared voluntarily withdrawal of about 600,000 Simplicity Inc. drop – side cribs involving various hardware problems and 900,000 Simplicity translatable bassinettes  after federal regulators associated the products with two infant deaths from strangulation.

After the death of three babies, one million Graco and Simplicity cribs manufactured from China have been recalled. It is the biggest recall ever. On September 21, 2007, Federal Regulators announced the recall of approximately 1 million cribs produced by Simplicity Inc. because the drop rail on the nation’s largest selling models can disengage from the crib forming a hazardous gap responsible for the death of three small children across the United States. According to the Federal Consumer Products and Safety Commission (CPSC), it got reports of three infant deaths, six infants trapped and 50 other incidents associated with faulty drop rail design and hardware. However, in all the three cases of deaths, parents had unknowingly installed the drop rails wrong way up. The voluntarily withdrawn Simplicity crib models include the following:

  • Aspen four in one
  • Crib N Changer Combo
  • Chelsea
  • Nursery in a box
  • Pooh 4 in one
  • Aspen three in one

This recall also includes Simplicity cribs that used the Graco logo: Ultra 4 in 1, Trio, Aspen 3 in 1, Ultra 3 in 1, Ultra 5 in 1 and Whitney.
